I’m trying to learn how to fix my old car. Does the library have repair manuals?

The J. Erik Jonsson Central Library’s Business & Technology Division provides subscription access to ALLDATA Online, an electronic database which advertises itself as “the world’s most comprehensive resource for automotive diagnostic and repair information”.  Both do-it-yourselfers and professional mechanics take advantage of this database covering domestic and foreign vehicles for the past 20-plus years.

The Division’s collection also includes hardbound repair manuals for many vehicles, including some models from the 1930s and 40s, as well as other repair reference sources from respected publishers such as Mitchell Repair Information Company and Chilton.

Can these manuals be checked out or are they for in-house use only?

Since the manuals are so hard to find, we do keep some of them for in-house use only. We want them to be available for people when they need them. However, quite a few of them do check out. To find out if we have the manual you are looking for and whether or not it checks out, call 214-670-1608. Remember, you can copy pages from the manual and have them right there beside you when you work.
