I’m doing genealogy research and need a roll of microfilm that Dallas doesn’t own. Can you help me get it?

If a record has been placed on microform by the Family History Library (FHL) in Salt Lake City, Utah, it is generally available to Dallas Public Library (DPL) customers in the Central Library’s Genealogy Division for a small rental fee. Effectively, this can open up your genealogical research to 2.4 million rolls of microfilm and over 725,000 microfiche records containing information from the United States, Canada, the British Isles, Europe, Latin America, and Africa

The FHL is the largest genealogical library in the world. Founded to gather genealogical records and assist members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) with their family history, the library is open to the general public and makes their microform collections available to Family History Centers around the world. DPL is a part of this Family History Center rental program, allowing our customers to order film or fiche. The catalog of the Family History Library (FHL) is available on the internet at www.familysearch.org. Books cannot be borrowed from the Family History Library.

To order microfilm, the fee is $5.75 per roll paid at time of ordering. Cash is not accepted; payment needs to be by check or money order made out to DGS (Dallas Genealogical Society). All orders must be placed in person; no telephone orders are accepted. A Dallas Public Library card is not required to use this service.

Microfiche is available at 15 cents per sheet. All sheets in a collection under a single number must be ordered. Microfiche does not have to be returned to Salt Lake City and immediately becomes the property of the Genealogy Section when the patron is finished using it for research.

Generally, film arrives in two or three weeks and you will be notified by a staff member when your film is available for use. You have unlimited use of the film in the Genealogy Section for thirty days. Film may be renewed for an additional sixty days for a fee of $5.50 per roll. Film that is renewed a second time will remain on indefinite loan to the Dallas Public Library.

Material on indefinite loan enhances our collection of Genealogical materials. Individual patrons have added over 300 rolls of microfilm since the start of this program. The Dallas Genealogical Society has added well over 600 rolls of microfilm and an impressive collection of microfiche for the United States.

This page needs to be updated. Patrons now rent the microfilm at the Family History Library website and it is shipped to the Dallas Library.

Thanks for the comment, Jean. I got back to our Genealogy staff and you are correct there has been a change in how the process works. I’ll be posting updated information in the coming weeks. Thanks, again!
