Book Review: Mercy Watson Fights Crime by Kate DiCamillo

Mercy Watson Fights CrimeThere is no such thing as a quiet night at the Watson’s house.  One night while everyone is sleeping, Leroy Ninker a small man who dreams of being a cowboy, but for now is a thief, enters the Watson household–”Yippie-i-oh, everything must go!”–and clannngggg, tosses their toaster into his bag. Awakened by the noise, Mercy, the Watsons’ beloved pet pig, rushes in to see who is making toast– her favorite snack.  When Mercy discovers it’s only a small man in a cowboy suit, she loses interest and falls asleep in the doorway.  Leroy thinks he’s safe, but then it dawns on him: how will he get away, Mercy was blocking him in?  As Leroy ponders a plan of escape, he opens a piece of butter-barrel candy.  Then suddenly the sweet buttery smell awakens Mercy and she gives Leroy a pig bronco ride as she searches for the source of the butter smell.  Of course, neighbors Eugenia and baby Lincoln get in on the act and soon the firefighters and Officer Tomilello do too.

Come and join the adventures of Mercy Watson.  Will she be the pig that saves the day or will she only find her buttery snack?
