Exhibit: Optical Adventures by The University of Texas at Dallas

Where: Arcadia Park Branch Library

What do telescopes, kaleidoscopes and microscopes all have in common? What about the camera on your cell phone? They all use light and lenses. Play with different lenses, colored filters, and polarizer to see how light behaves and how images are formed and understand how the lenses in the camera on your phone work. The exhibit is made possible by the University of Texas at Dallas.


Summer Reading Club Volunteer Opportunities

Make a difference this summer by giving your time, energy and talent! Arcadia Park Branch Library is looking for volunteers to read one-on-one with beginner readers; to assist with the summer lunch & snack program; and more. If you can read, clean, organize, teach, or "just help out"; enjoy working with children; and can commit at least 90 minutes each week, we have a place for you.

Volunteer orientations take place every first Tuesday monthly at 2 P.M. or by appointment. If you are 14 or older and interested in becoming a Dallas Public Library volunteer, please attend an orientation session to learn more about our opportunities and fill out an application. All court ordered community service volunteers must call The Volunteer Center of North Texas at 214-821-8711 ext.410 to register for and complete orientation before volunteering for the Dallas Public Library.


Baby Bounce Basics

Babies and parents/caregivers are invited for a lapsit storytime that introduces simple rhymes, songs and books to stimulate infants. Suggested ages: 0 to 24 months.


Computer Class for Adults: Microsoft Excel

Learn to use Microsoft Excel to create a spreadsheet and charts. Students will have many opportunities for practice.


Get Up & Go! Afterschool Program

What does it mean to be healthy? The 8-week Get Up & Go program teaches children the basics of healthy nutrition, physical activity, goal setting and more in a fun, encouraging environment. Parents are welcome too! The program is made possible by Children's Health.

Toastmasters Workshop: From Speaker to Trainer

When: Saturday, April 11, 2015 - 10:00 AM
Where: Arcadia Park Branch Library (in the Meeting Room A & B)

Learn and practice the five steps involved in preparing and presenting a training program using adult learning principles. Learn the roles of trainers and the differences between public speaking and training, and gain practical experience in facilitating discussion and conducting exercises. This workshop, presented by June Roca of FunAsia Toastmasters Club, is free and open to the public.

Library Live! Poetry Month

Close your eyes and remember a time in your life when you felt carefree and happy as master storyteller Alfreda Rollins reads aloud this beloved poem. Use your imagination to recreate the motion of a swing and remember what it feels like to have the wind blowing on your face and through your hair. Then, create a vision board that reflects your feelings or one that illustrates a specific destination where you wish to travel.
