Cemento Grande: An Exhibit by the Dallas Mexican American Historical League

When: Monday, July 14, 2014 - Saturday, August 30, 2014
Where: Arcadia Park Branch Library

Cemento Grande, located near what is today I-30 and Chalk Hill Road, was the company town for workers of the Trinity Portland Cement Company in the early to mid 1900s. This exhibit, produced by the Dallas Mexican American Historical League (DMAHL), shows images of families who lived in the Cemento Grande area.

DMAHL is also looking for residents of Arcadia Park to share their stories and photos for an upcoming exhibit on Arcadia Park. Learn more about DMAHL and their mission to preserve Mexican-American history in Dallas at www.dmahl.org.


Microworld Adventures: Exhibit by the University of Texas at Dallas

When: Thursday, July 10, 2014 - Sunday, November 30, 2014
Where: Arcadia Park Branch Library

What does your skin look like up close? How about your cotton shirt or your hair? Mouth parts of a housefly? This exhibit has both a "scope on a rope" microscope and a high magnification microscope. Come and learn to use them to view prepared specimens as well as other objects of your own choosing and start exploring the microworlds around you. The exhibit is provided by the Science and Engineering Education Center at the University of Texas at Dallas.

The Science Lab

Join us for a minds-on, hands-on introduction to the world of electricity, engineering, chemistry and more! Sessions include "Super Snap Circuits," "Dynamic Detectives," "LEGO Challenge," and "Dough Creatures." Some projects are based on curriculum from the SciGirls PBS television series. Girls and boys are welcome! Recommended age: 8-13

Tie Dye Art

Did you miss the first tie dye program at Arcadia Park Branch Library earlier this summer? Back by popular demand is another opportunity to create your own tie dye shirt! Bring a pre-washed, white 100% cotton shirt. Wear old clothes or an apron in case of splatter. Staff will demonstrate a simple pattern. Adults are welcome to come early at 2:00 to look over more complicated designs.

Texas A&M AgriLife Nutrition Education Program

When: Monday, August 04, 2014 - 1:00 PM
Where: Arcadia Park Branch Library (in the Meeting Room A & B)

Learn basic nutrition, food safety, shopping on a budget, and food preparation skills through hands-on activities and cooking demonstrations. Participants who complete six sessions earn a nutrition certificate.


Junior Robotics Camp

When: Monday, August 11, 2014 - 10:00 AM
Where: Arcadia Park Branch Library (in the Meeting Room A & B)

Kids seven to ten years old work together to build and program their robo creations. Develop communication, design, and problem-solving skills while having hands-on, minds-on fun! Space is very limited - registration is required. Recommended ages: 7 to 10.


Every Child Ready to Read Workshop/ Taller de Cada NiƱo Listo Para Leer

When: Monday, August 11, 2014 - 1:30 PM
Where: Arcadia Park Branch Library (in the Children's Area)

Learn how to help your child be ready to read in this 4-session, interactive workshop. Parents of infants, toddlers, preschoolers and even early readers will come away with practical tools and resources to help their children succeed in reading.
