Job Seeker Resource Center Nancy and Jake L. Hamon Oil and Gas Resource Center

The Business and Technology Division is located on the Central Library’s 5th Floor. In addition to a comprehensive collection of business and economic resources, 5th Floor collections cover an array of subject areas that fall within the broad classifications of technology and science, including:

Business Information Sources and Services

Business and economic resources available in the Division serve a variety of information needs, including:

  • Learn to manage your personal finances
  • Identify potential business customers for your small business product or service Use ReferenceUSA database's Custom Search feature to build lists of companies meeting criteria you specify, such as type of business, business size, and/or geographic area.
  • Find in-depth company information to prepare for a job interview Search for a company profile of your potential employer in Standard & Poor's NetAdvantage or Hoover's Business Information.
  • Research an industry - find market value, segmentation, forecast, etc. Search for an industry profile for the market of interest in the EBSCOHost Enhanced Business Search Interface database.
  • Learn investing strategies, investigate stock, bond, and mutual fund performance Use the Morningstar database Stock Screener to identify stocks rated highly by Morningstar’s analysts, or define your own criteria to screen by (sector, equity style, valuation, etc.)
  • Find information to guide you through the steps of starting a small business

In these collections, library customers will find information ranging from the theoretical to the practical and from the introductory to the advanced, offering answers to such questions as:

  • What is string theory?
  • What does the medical procedure "angiogram" involve?
  • How do I repair my PC? Build a shed? Repair my car?Use the database AllData Online to find repair steps/diagrams for your vehicle
  • What is the best dog breed for my family?
  • How do I cook a soufflé? Make wine? Make my own soap? Grow tomatoes?

Small Business Resource Center

Starting a small business? Take an idea and turn it into a profitable business using guidance from resources in the Small Business Resource Center. Determine legal requirements, identify potential sources of funding, learn to write a business plan, and address other information needs entrepreneurs face.

To offer guidance and resources to assist in starting a small business in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, library staff have created a Starting a Small Business in Dallas subject guide.


Job Seeker Resource Center

The Job Seeker Resource Center (JSRC) includes a large collection of books and other resources to assist job-seekers. Computer workstations with extended session lengths are available for the following uses:

  • Career exploration
  • Resume/Cover Letter development
  • Researching prospective employers
  • Online job searching/application submission
  • Email communication related to job seeking
