Livre DíHeures. (Book of Hours) France, middle 15th century.

Gift of the Friends of the Dallas Public Library, Inc. in memory of Cleora Clanton.

Books of hours contained daily prayers for laymen. They were produced by hand. First, a scribe copied the text, then a miniaturist painted the New Testament scenes, and finally another artist drew in the borders. This book of hours contains six large and twenty-five smaller miniature paintings in gold and colors. Elaborate borders with floral sprays surround each page, with capital letters in burnished gold and colors.
