The Four Gospels of the Lord Jesus Christ According to the Authorized Version of King James I with Decorations by Eric Gill. Waltham St. Lawrence, Berkshire: The Golden Cockerel Press, 1931.

Gift of friends and associates in memory of Clifton L. Moss, Jr.

The modern English book illustrator Eric Gill was uniquely innovative in combining typography and the figurative arts. In this limited edition of the Gospels, the "word" of the scriptures serves as a scaffolding device for the entire composition. Sparingly decorative and judicious in their contrasts of black on white, Gillís expressive wood engravings remain faithful to the earliest traditions of Christian imagery. The Four Gospels is regarded as the greatest piece of printing from Golden Cockerel Press and it remains a favorite among twentieth-century sacred books.
