Mary Austin Holley. Texas: Observations, Historical, Geographical and Descriptive, in a Series of Letters. Baltimore: Armstrong & Plaskitt, 1833.

Gift of the Friends of the Dallas Public Library, Inc.

Holley, cousin to and close friend of Stephen F. Austin, wrote this book with Austinís assistance following a visit to his colony in 1831. It is the first book on Texas by an Anglo-American and the first book in English entirely about Texas. In addition to assisting Holley with the text, Austin contributed the use of his map of Texas that is inserted in the front of the volume. Both Holleyís book and Austinís map were widely distributed in the United States and are credited with bringing many Anglo settlers to Texas.
