Thomas L. McKenney and James Hall. History of the Indian Tribes of North America, with biographical sketches and anecdotes of the principal chiefs. 3 volumes. Philadelphia: D. Rice and J. G. Clark, 1842-44.

Gift of the Friends of the Dallas Public Library, Inc.

James Hall wrote the biographies of chiefs and the history of each tribe. The 120 beautifully colored, hand-finished lithographs were copied from oil portraits painted mostly by Charles Bird King during the 1820s. The original oil paintings were destroyed by fire, leaving these book illustrations as the best record of the features and dress of the early chiefs.
