Hartmann Schedel. Liber Chronicarum (Nuremberg Chronicle). Nuremberg: Anton Koberger, 1493.

Anonymous gift in memory of George I. Popper and George Arthur Popper.

This popular and charming, although not always historically accurate, world history begins with the creation of the earth and ends during the 1400s. The 1,800 woodcut illustrations (some repeated from a group of 645 printing blocks) by Michael Wolgemut and Wilhelm Pleydenwurf reflect the townscapes, life, and dress of the fifteenth century. This substantial volume was produced only about fifty years after the invention of moveable type printing and stands as a landmark of early printing history.
