Francois Rabelais. Pantagruel. Illustrated by Andre Derain. Paris: Albert Skira, 1943.

Gift of S. T. and Margaret D. Harris.
Rabelais wrote this boisterous satire in the 1500s. Derain’s brightly colored woodcuts, which he designed during the Nazi occupation of Paris, superbly capture the moods of the sixteenth century and the personalities in the tale. Each picture required only one block, to which all colors were applied by stencil.
