The Family History Library (FHL) in Salt Lake City, Utah is the largest genealogical library in the world. It was founded to gather genealogical records and assist members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) with their family history. Now open to the general public, the Family History Library collection includes over two million rolls of microfilm which are available to Dallas Public Library patrons. These records are from the United States, Canada, the British Isles, Europe, Latin America and Africa.
The catalog of the Family History Library (FHL) is available online at the following link: www.familysearch.org/eng/library/fhlc. Additionally, a video tutorial explaining the use of the FHL catalog is also available. (See above links.)
After choosing the microfilm or microfiche desired from the (FHL) catalog, ordering is done online using the (FHL) ordering service found at the following link: https://www.familysearch.org/films/. During the ordering process, you may choose the Dallas Public Library as the destination of your order. Varying fees apply when ordering from the (FHL). More information is available at the Family History Library website.
Microfiche does not have to be returned to Salt Lake City and immediately becomes the property of the Genealogy Section when the patron is finished using it.
Only microfilm and microfiche, not books, may be ordered from the Family History Library. Generally, film arrives in two or three weeks and you will be notified by email when your film is available for use. You have unlimited use of the film in the Genealogy Section for thirty days. Film may be renewed a second time for an additional sixty days and this second-renewal film will remain on indefinite loan to the Dallas Public Library.
Material on indefinite loan enhances our collection of genealogies and county records. Individual patrons have added over 300 rolls of microfilm since the start of this program and The Dallas Genealogical Society has added well over 600.
