Mail Reference Requests

The Genealogy Section of the Dallas Public Library offers a limited reference service through the mail (not including obituary requests which are available from the Texas/Dallas History Division -- see below). The library charges a $10.00 nonrefundable research fee that entitles you to 30 minutes of staff time for research and up to two photocopies (additional photocopies are $1.00/page). To initiate a request, please send a note or letter describing the information you would like staff to look for along with a check or money order payable to Dallas Public Library (Texas residents must add 8.25% sales tax). Your written request and payment should be mailed to:

Patrons are limited to two queries per month. Requests that do not include full payment or exceed the monthly limit will be returned unanswered. Patrons may wish to check with the interlibrary loan department of their local library as they might be able to order photocopies from materials in our holdings.

Obituary Requests

The Texas/Dallas History & Archives Division maintains microfilm of Texas newspapers. A list of their holdings is available at: http://dallaslibrary2.org/texas/newspapers.htm. To initiate a request, please send a note or letter with the name and date of death of the person whose obituary you are seeking, along with a check or money order payable to Dallas Public Library (Texas residents must add 8.25% sales tax). Your written request and payment should be mailed to:

As an alternative to asking the Texas/Dallas History & Archives Division to search for obituaries, you may want to check the Dallas Morning News' website: http://www.dallasnews.com. They have three fee-based online databases. The first covers the entire newspaper from October 1885 to 1977, the second has articles only (no photos or paid death notices) from September 1984 forward, and the third is an obituary database that has obituaries written by editorial staff from September 1984 forward and paid death notices from 2001 forward. The link to the archives databases appears at the bottom of the first screen. Although you can search without charge, there is a fee to view, print, or download articles.
