Historical BackgroundThe Northaven Book Club was organized on 26 April 1957 by founders Mary Pittman and Bonnie Aschner. Most of those invited to join were mothers of third graders at Arthur Kramer Grade School. Membership was first limited to thirty women residing in the Northaven area only. Annual dues were $10.00 and Mrs. Bard W. Paul was the sole reviewer until 1975, when the duty was delegated to a different member each meeting. Over the years, membership size and club dues increased. In 1996, club meetings moved from members' houses to the Royal Oaks Country Club. The club disbanded in April 2004. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and ContentsThe collection was donated in May 2004 after the club disbanded. It contains minutes of club meetings and a club yearbook. This collection might be most useful for those studying women's social clubs in Dallas during the mid to late twentieth century. Photocopying of the collection is allowed at the discretion of the archivist. The collection contains two (2) binders of club minutes and a 2003-2004 club yearbook. The minutes specify where the club met, the date and time of the meeting, how many members and guests attended, the club's bank account activities, and the title and author of the book being reviewed. The yearbook contains a short history of the club, a list of past presidents, 2002-2003 club officers, and a 2003-2004 membership roster. The collection contains one picture of the 1990-1991 club officers. Return to the Table of Contents Index Terms
