Historical Background

When the Lucas well struck oil on January 10, 1901, the amount of oil from this well stunned the world. Many in the petroleum industry had never seen this kind of production. The Spindle Top area, south of Beaumont, Texas was transformed. Prices in the area skyrocketed overnight as oil men and speculators attempted to get their own wells set up.

One such speculator was the Reverend J.B. Cranfill. Founder of the newspaper the Baptist Standard, Dr. Cranfill left his job as financial secretary at Baylor University to try his luck on the oil fields. Cranfill solicited thousands of dollars from other Baptist clergy to start the San Jacinto Oil Company, which went under in 1902.

The majority of the collection is canceled stock arranged alphabetically by the shareholders name. Some of the stock certificates were attached to correspondence sent from the shareholder to Mr. Cranfill.
