In 1946, 50 independent grocers banded together for the purpose of mass buying, and established the Associated Wholesale Grocers of Dallas. With corporate chains dominating the retail grocer business, and independent grocers paying more wholesale prices, the AWG expanded, from 50 members in 1946 to 500 in 1961, to over 900 in 1964. To handle the growth of the AWG in Dallas and to further decrease the wholesale cost of its member stores, a massive warehouse was built in 1955 in the Brook Hollow Industrial District, now Stemmons Business Corridor. Originally built, it was five acres large but soon doubled by 1960 to ten acres due to the expansion of business in the area. In 1960 D.A. Keener was appointed General Manager of the food distribution company headquartered out of the warehouse. Under his administration, the company's warehouse doubled in size and utilized the latest technology necessary to handle the growth of the AWG in Dallas.

This collection consists of materials documenting D.A. Keener's career as general manager of the AWG Warehouse, as well as the warehouse's growth. David Keener started work for Associated Wholesale Grocers (later Affiliated Food Stores) when it opened in 1946. After fourteen years in its bookeeping department, he became general manager. Information includes stockholders materials, company publications, news paper clippings, and company photographs of the warehouse.
