Biographical Note

James Frank Oliver was born October 20, 1916 in Dallas, TX and died on April 20, 2006. He had three careers throughout his eighty-nine years. He worked in New Orleans, LA as a young newspaper cartoonist for the New Orleans Times Picayune. He was also known as a commercial artist in Dallas as well as a published travel writer and Texas sketch artist. He is survived by his wife, Jean Pieper Oliver, and his two children, Jim and Mary Margaret, and grandchildren.

Frank Oliver based his life on the book of James and believed John 3:16 was the most important thing a person could trust. He was a prolific artist, yet modest. He cheered for the Dallas Cowboys, supported Boy Scouts of America, and loved to play golf. He appreciated and sought out natural beauty. He was also an avid story-teller with an enormous imagination.

He became an acclaimed Texas sketch artist through his series titled Texas! Discovering the Lone Star State with Frank Oliver. This series was published weekly in newspapers across the state of Texas. His work covered numerous regions throughout Texas including the Great Plains, Hill Country, Coastal Plains, Rolling Prairies, Gulf Coast, Far West, Piney Woods, and the Rio Grande Valley.

He has a collection of articles that was published in 1972 into a two volume book under the same title as the articles, Texas! Discovering the Lone Star State with Frank Oliver.

Scope and Contents

The collection contains templates, articles, negatives, and maps of the articles and sketches in the Texas! series. There are also his travel maps and artist magazines within the collection. The articles and sketches are predominately in chronological order and cover several regions across the state of Texas. Frank Oliver would also make the rare trip out of the state of Texas to Mexico or Oklahoma. He covered many regions of Texas. If the region is known, it has been noted on the folder.

The regions of Texas Oliver used are Piney Woods, Rolling Prairies, Great Plains, Coastal Plains, Gulf Coast, Rio Grande Valley, and the Far West. Not all of these regions are the same as noted in regional maps of Texas. His regions are described in the booklets found in box 4 folders 23-28.

The collection is arranged chronologically by the date of publication. The articles and sketches begin in 1968 and run through 1974. There are 16 miscellaneous folders where the date of publication could not be found and have been placed at the end of the collection after 1974. If a year of publication was found, that year has been noted and are scattered through the year of publication or are gathered together at the end of the year (i.e. items published in 1972 can be found within the dated year as well as at the end before 1973).

The collection contains 3 boxes of articles and sketches and 1 box containing Frank Oliver's maps and travel guides. Box 1 contains the articles, templates, and sketches from 1968-September 1970. Box 2 contains articles, templates, and sketches from October 1970-June 1972. Box 3 contains articles, templates, and sketches from July 1972-March 1974. Box 4 contains the rest of 1974 and the 16 miscellaneous articles with unidentified years. It also contains booklets published in 1975 for each region Oliver traveled to. Each booklet contains 18 articles from that region. The Hill Country region is missing. Following the Discover Texas! series, box 4 contains various maps and travel guides Frank Oliver used during his travels across the state. This box also contains the 1963 Standard Advertising Register and works of artists that inspired Oliver's work.

Box 5 contains the Landon assignments and workbooks. Charles Nelson Landon was the founder of The Landon School of Illustrating and Cartooning in Cleveland, OH in 1909. The Landon School had a mail-in program that Oliver was a part of. All of the sketches in this portion of the Frank Oliver collection are his early work as he was perfecting his skills in art. The dates of these sketches fall in the early to mid-1930s. Dates are known from correspondence letters in this portion of the collection.
