McCamey Business and Professional Women's Club Records

Biographical Note

The McCamey Business and Professional Women's Club was established in McCamey, Texas in 1938 and was one of several organizations formed by working women which formed the Texas Federation of Business and Professional Women's Clubs. The state federations were also organized at the national and international level.

The organization focused on issues that faced working women. They lobbied against legislation that denied jobs for married women and gave preferences to unmarried women and males. The club mobilized women to become politically active and established a network of working women who supported and campaigned for equal rights, equal pay, and the educational advancement of women. The McCamey Business and Professional Women's Club also participated in local civic issues such as school board elections.

Scope and Contents

The collection was created as one scrapbook chronicling the club from 1950 to 1960. The contents of the scrapbook mainly consists of news clippings. There are also some correspondence, photos, and minutes of the annual state convention of the business and professional women's clubs.

This collection would be useful for people interested in women's history, as it shows the involvement of professional business women in many political issues, such as supporting female school board members and praising politicians who supported women's rights while denouncing those who did not.

Arrangement

The collection was received as one scrapbook. The contents of the scrapbook was organized in reverse chronological order, which has been retained in the arrangement of this collection. The wooden scapbook that held the documents together was kept as part of the collection and placed in the last folder. The minutes of the annual state conventions were separated from the contents of the scapbook and itemized into a separate folder in the collection for easier access to those documents; however, correspondence were kept in its original placement within the scrapbook to retain context of each letter within the scrapbook.
