The collection is arranged alphabetically by Texas towns and cities. Box 12 has the cards which are "General-Texas," meaning ones which do not depict a specific city, but represent the whole state or a specific Texas topic such as Texas Longhorn Cattle. Also in Box 12 are a few oversized cards. The number in each category varies from one card to an entire box such as box 5 for Fort Worth. Box 3 for Dallas cards has been subdivided into smaller categories including: buildings, Fair Park, Cotton Bowl, the Texas Centennial in Dallas, 1936, and specific Dallas topics.
A post card collection is a valuable visual resource. In many cases, especially in early years, a post card is the only view available. This collection is a valuable compliment to the photograph collection in the Texas/Dallas History and Archives Division.

The major portion of this collection was donated to the Dallas Public Library in August, 1983 by Irene Carnes. Other post cards of Texas towns and Texas related scenes have been incorporated to the Carnes collection over the years, and most likely will continue to be added. The post cards, for the most part, are in mint condition. Many have been used, and postmarked, others are blank.
