Historical Background

The Board of Trustees for Dallas was organized on June 16th, 1884 in the law office of R.D. Coughanour, and with the help of Colonel Martin and E.M. Tillman. From this organization, the Dallas Independent School District (D.I.S.D.) was formed. The city of Dallas purchased the Dallas Female Academy on Bryan Street to serve as the first public school in Dallas. From this single school, the D.I.S.D. has grown to 227 schools, 159,752 students and 10,712 teachers. For over 100 years, D.I.S.D. has continued to serve the educational needs of a large portion of Dallas.
