If there is one man in Dallas who represents the voice in the wilderness, it's Max Goldblatt. Born on December 6, 1911, the son of an immigrant Jewish family, he became a businessman, politician, and spokesman. He has been described as a dreamer, visionary, a man with integrity, vocal and opinionated. In the Dallas Times Herald, April 9, 1990, Max quoted in response to being called a political gadfly, "Socrates was a political gadfly; I'm glad to be in his company." His ideas on issues facing the city of Dallas were often unique. Undaunted by critics, he continues to espouse his ideas.
Max Goldblatt and his wife Rosa live in Pleasant Grove area. His business, a hardware store at 8022 Traders Village Place, ended forty years of service, November 11, 1985 with Max's retirement at age 74.
Max first ran for a Dallas City Council seat in 1967. Because of the citywide "at-large" election system, he won the district but lost the race. ,ax filed a lawsuit against the system in favor of single member districts. Due to legal technicalities, the suit failed. In 1975 a similar suit claiming the "at-large" system was discriminatory was successful in changing the City of Dallas elections to include single member districts.
Max was elected to the City Council in 1979 representing District 7. He served three terms for a total of seven years. During his tenure as a city councilman he was able to achieve many things. The formation of the Dallas County Community College District and flood controls for the Pleasant Grove area are two of the items he is proud of the most.
Transportation, transit and traffic problems became issues he concentrated on and the issues Max Goldblatt will be remembered for.
He was nicknamed "Monorail Max" because of his very vocal attempt to bring the Disney Corporation to Dallas in order to build a monorail. He continually criticized DART (Dallas Area Rapid Transit) for being inefficient and antiquated. The monorail idea was shunned and laughed at by the city leaders. However, it may be that his futuristic approach was just "ahead of his time".
As of 1990, Max Goldblatt and his wife are still active in Dallas. At 79, Max continues to lecture, tour, and voice his opinions.
