Dallas Transportation Department Scrapbooks

Scope and Contents

For many years, the Transportation Department of the City of Dallas maintained scrapbooks of newspaper clippings on various issues including electric, gas, and telephone service as well as streetcars, busses, street lighting, taxicabs, and traffic accidents. Most of the clippings are from local newspapers and cover Dallas concerns, but there is scattered coverage on some subjects for utility issues in other cities. Most of the scrapbooks were maintained in three-ring binders separated by year and then by subject, but there was some crossover in the subject or date coverage in each binder. When his collection was processed, subjects were grouped together and arranged by date order to facilitate study of a particlular topic. The earliest clippings (through 1943) were not subdivided into specific subjects, so all topics are contained in folders for a particular year. There are gaps in the clipping coverage-some years there is no coverage for a given topic.
