Truth in advertising, fair business practices and consumer protection agencies are things most people take for granted. However, without the integrity and foresight of early pioneers in business these important values would not have been so easily incorporated into the competitive world market. Even though there are few who try to avoid the laws and ethical practices, the majority hold true to them, not only as a matter of legality but also pride and tradition as well. The tradition for Dallas began in 1908.
On June 17, 1908, eleven Dallas businessmen gathered with ideas to promote Dallas and to work for better values in advertising. Calling themselves the Dallas Advertising League, DAL for short, these charter members spread the word and by the second gathering on June 26th the ranks increased to sixty. The League stated as its main purpose, "to suppress fake and scheme advertising, to place Dallas before the world, and to secure better results from legitimate advertising by study and hearing instructive talks on advertising at its meetings."(Dallas Times Herald, April 24, 1983, section K)
Other advertising associations with similar goals for greater integrity in advertising and business practices were forming throughout the United States. Conventions began to spring up in order to combine forces. In May 1912, the first national meeting held in Dallas was the Associated Advertising Clubs of America (AACOA). Three-thousand delegates attended. The main business of this convention became the "Truth in Advertising Code," a goal of the DAL, which eventually led to the Better Business Bureau which protects modern consumers to this day.
On the local levels, men such as Gus Thomasson, George W. Baker, John Philip, J.C. Phelps and Richard Haughton Sr., led the DAL toward their goals. Mr. Will H. Rogers wrote the following in order to express these goals, probably for the 40th anniversary celebration:
This is the philosophy of the Dallas Advertising
League, and the areas in which it shall be
carried out.
MEMBERSHIP: Persons in Metropolitan Dallas
who create, produce, buy or sell advertising
are eligible for membership in the League, and
continuing effort shall be made by the League
to enroll as many of them as possible. Special
effort shall be made to obtain as members those
with authority to commit their firms to action
in matters pertaining to the Advertising industry,
those with stature that can influence others
favorably toward Advertising, and young people
with promising futures in the business.
FELLOWSHIP: One of the primary functions of the
League shall be to furnish opportunity forAdvertising people of Dallas to meet, become
better acquainted and to fraternize with one
another at regular meetings and at special
entertainment affairs of the League. To this
end special effort shall be made to make
attendance attractive and to urge attendance
on the membership.
SERVICE TO MEMBERS: One of the objectives of
the League shall be to serve its members by
kKeeping them informed through the club
publication, through its programs, and in special activities such as seminars and special training,
about new developments, Ideas and techniques in Advertising, and about news of local happenings
within the industry. It shall be the vehicle
for making citations and awarding honors for
service to Advertising.
SERVICE TO ADVERTISING: The League shall act as
the voice of Advertising in Dallas, and shall
try to be the principal spokesman of the industry
here to the public and to local, state and
federal government agencies in matters affecting
Advertising.
As the Voice of Advertising, the League shall
work closely with other vertical advertising and
related organizations in Dallas and elsewhere to
obtain cooperation and unified effort in projects
beneficial to Advertising.
The League shall work toward the development and
enforcement of a code of ethics that will promote
good taste and truth in Advertising.
Part of its service to Advertising shall be
public relations for the industry through a
strong Advertising Week program each year and
other projects which will reflect favorably on
the League and on Advertising.
SERVICE TO DALLAS: Believing that whatever
builds its community helps to build the various
parts of the community, including the Advertising
industry, the League shall sponsor and work on
projects that will obtain favorable publicity for
Dallas.
SERVICE TO CIVIC ACTIVITIES: The Advertising
League shall make the special talents of its
members available, individually and collectively,
for promotion, publicity and advertising for
various civic enterprises of a broad public
nature. It shall continue to offer its service
to the United Fund, as it has for many years
past, and shall extend its offer of similar
service to other projects such as those of
various departments of the city government and
the school system.
EDUCATION FOR AND ABOUT ADVERTISING: The League
shall promote projects to train and bring new
recruits into the industry. This shall include
such activities as the annual Student Tour, a
student and teacher intern program, and other
work with schools. Special attention shall be
given to building the Alfonso Johnson Library.
The League also shall work on projects to inform
The public about advertising, how it works in the
free enterprise system, its importance and value.
This shall be done through such activities as the
annual editorial contest for high school students,
teacher tours, the speakers bureau, and
distribution of information through other means.
(reprinted from typed manuscript in Box 1 folder 5)
The organization has been meeting regularly, along with other special events, for the past 78 years. Throughout its long history in Dallas, as the oldest service organization, the Ad League has always been ready to assist the community from conservation efforts during World War II to current United Way fund-raising and Santa Claus Christmas' for needy children. Through their publication, Ok'd copy, first printed in 1913, awards and speakers' forums as well as luncheon meetings, members are kept informed on new ideas and ways towards excellence.
