Background
The Dallas Federation of Women's Clubs is an organization uniting the various women's clubs in Dallas, first formed in 1898 as the City Federation of Women's Clubs. The Texas Federation was created earlier in 1897, and the Dallas Chapter joined. The first main project for the new organization was a city library. Representatives from six women's groups agreed to work together and elected Mrs. Henry Exall president. Clubs such as Zonta, BP&W, Dallas Shakespeare Club, and the Pierian Club are among the many organizations that have joined to help many worthy causes by fund raising as well as political involvement and volunteer work. The Federation has worked continuously for many civic projects.
The Library was only the beginning. Other endeavors such as the Dallas Art Association, the Kindergarten Association, and the Girls' Foundation Home are among the united efforts. Many of the club's achievements are "Dallas first," including a municipal Christmas tree and swimming pool. The salary for the first police matron for female prisoners was provided by the Federation. Health and child care are still major priorities. Beautification projects for the city, such as the creation of Fair Park from the old State Fair grounds, received major support. Under the motto "Willingly, for the good of others we work," the Dallas Federation has contributed to the success of the city.
