Students at Colonial Elementary School, located at 1824 Pennsylvania Ave., celebrated Book Week during the late 1950s. During segregation, the South Dallas school served white students only until the fall of 1957, when it became a "Negro" school as more African-American families moved into the area just south and west of Fair Park. Pictured with the students and teachers is the school principal Clarence Leroy Dennard.
